The world’s best designers and design-minded business leaders are gathering this October 2 in New York City for Fast Company's Innovation by Design Conference. We are disrupting the traditional conference format—there will be no multiperson panels moderated by under-prepared moderators. Instead, you'll get a series of highly visual presentations in an intimate setting (82 Mercer St.) leading to a series of offsite Design Experiences and a cocktail party that night. The complete agenda is right here—several of the offsite design tours have already sold out—and we’ve added a completely new panel to the lineup.

Here are five reasons you should get a ticket now.

Anemia, a condition of low red blood cells, is primarily caused by deficiency of iron. A whopping 44% of Cambodians suffer from anemia, including two-thirds of the country’s entire population of children. At the same time, about 70% of Cambodians live on less than $1 a day, pushing iron supplements (or red meat) far out of reach.

Chris Charles, then a University of Guelph PhD student, traveled to Cambodia to tackle the problem, he had a crucial resource at hand: a study showing that simply adding iron to food while cooking could increase iron levels in the blood.

That’s where this lucky iron fish comes in.

At our Innovation By Design Awards last night, Softwalks by Howard Chambers and Bland Hoke of Parsons the New School for Design won the Student Award! Any visitor to New York City has walked through dark, grimy sidewalk sheds under scaffolding. This team created a modular system with a seat, counter, planter, screen, and lighting to turn such spaces into pocket parks. “This has business relevance in the world’s largest cities,” judge and Behance co-founder and CEO Scott Belsky says.
