The New York Times is reporting that starting in 2009 two Pharmaceutical companies, Eli Lilly and Merck, will post online a record of payments they have made to doctors for speaking and other services.
I believe that is a great move. Transparency is always better than not.
This is pretty much a no-brainer. The Hippocratic Oath, like the Constitution, should be a living document, one which adapts and evolves according with the changing times. Hippocrates didn't anticipate Big Pharma, just like Adams and Madison didn't anticipate Twitter (check this out: http://valleywag.com/5055199/congress-reaches-tentative-agreemeent-++-ov...).
As long as they are being claimed on their taxes it doesn't matter one way or the other. We all already know that they receive these pay outs so why discuss the quantity. It only adds insult to injury and ticks people off.
Yes, the murky record of large and small Pharma Companies in Developed and Developing markets leads to huge conflict of interest and public health issues. It should therefore be mandatory for Doctors to disclose all types of payments and gifts that they me recieve from them. specially so if the quantum of the gift exceeds the value as specified under Foreign Currupt Practices Act.
