Technology: Sharing Breakfast
Yesterday was a fantastic day. :D
I got to meet Kfir Pravda, who was here for a few hours in NYC Friday morning awaiting his connecting flight to Israel. I was familiar with Kfir from blogging as well as our involvement with the Yahoo Videoblogging Group.

We've had interesting discussions about the direction of online video and television, but I never figured I'd meet him in person, since I had no plans to travel to Israel.

Technology: How Social is "Social" Media?
Jonny Goldstein interviewed me back in August 2007 on his show Jonny's Par-Tay [link]. Looking at the countdown timer to the end of the show, around -18:00 he asks me "So... Did you feel a little lonely before you got into all the social media stuff?" to which my response was that I'm actually LESS social NOW than I was before...

Technology: Do NOT Tamper With Your Comments!
I told my ex-girlfriend not to lie to me... I mean, she was still my girlfriend at the time, and now she isn't. The reason I told her that was that I was catching her in small, seemingly insignificant lies. VERY VERY small lies... Not even worth telling, to be sure. I explained to her that the most important thing you have in a relationship is trust. Without TRUST, you have nothing at all, because any communication you have with anyone will be tainted... untrustworthy... disbelieved. Lying to me about small things is WORSE than lying to me about important things, because it's not necessary. If your character can't stand up to the smallest criticism and you feel the pressure and need to LIE, then you CERTAINLY don't have the stomach to tell me the truth when it REALLY counts.
WHAT does this have to do with "Technology", you ask?... Because the same holds true in many situations, *including* posting on the internet. The way a lot of blogs are set up, including this one that I'm posting to right now, after the main entry, there's a section for comments. This is the place for viewers/readers to weigh in and let you know if they agree OR disagree with what you said, and why.

NewTeeVee's Liz Gannes reports that ABC.com recently posted all three seasons of Lost for HD streaming.

Check out Liz's post for more information. This is *certainly* good news for the people that found out about the "Lost" craze late and would like to start from the start and absorb the entire experience.

Technology: Are You A Tech Elitist?
Are *you* a Tech Elitist? If so, how's that workin' for ya?
As it's now Christmas, and we think of The Grinch sitting high on the hill, looking down on all the little people of the village with contempt... Let's consider our own positions in our respective fields and how we've chosen social media sites & groups as well as whom we've chosen to affiliate ourselves with.

There was much change during 2007. More ways to communicate. More social sites to join. More video hosts with their own little gimmicks that made them slightly different from the rest. New video editing software. New storage solutions. New live streaming options....

Technology: Network-Quality Series Developed For The Internet
Chuck Barney, of the Contra Costa Times posted an interesting article on freep.com today, entitled "'Quarterlife' ready for Internet debut".
According to the article, "Quarterlife", a series by Marshall Herskovitz and Edward Zwick (creators of the hit TV series "Thirtysomething") is being touted as the first time a "true, network-quality series" has been produced directly for the internet.

Technology: Facebook Pages And Social Ads
Facebook launched Facebook Pages today. This makes it easier for businesses, musicians, etc to represent themselves to the Facebook population, and makes it easier for the population to affiliate themselves with or review their favorites.
They have also launched Social Ads, which make use of your self-created affiliations to customize the ads you're likely to see. This is a good idea, since the latest ads I've seen on facebook were for Microsoft Windows (which I don't use), Harvard Business Online (which was down the street from my school, but I didn't go there... except for parties! :D), and Elite Online Dating..... Are they trying to TELL me something? :D
I think this is a great move, since a lot of people now use Facebook as their main source for daily information. It's better to allow people to make business pages inside Facebook than have people search for a link and then go off-site to get the same information.
It's also a great way for companies to enhance their online presence without spamming people's friends lists.
PS - In case you can't find the link to Facebook Pages, go all the way to the bottom of the page and click on Businesses and then you'll get the options, including Facebook Pages.
Or, just click here. :)

Technology: Dude... Where's My Twitter Link?
As I reported back on June 28, 2007, Twitter 'ruined my life' [link].
I realize _now_ that there's something that I left out.
Today, Charles Hope twittered... Yes, "twittered"... There's no such thing as a "tweet" or else the app would be named "tweeter".... Anyway... Charles twittered that the "older" link was no longer at the bottom of our Twitter pages. I checked it out, and sure enough, there was no link allowing me to check back past my first page of the most recent posts. I figured that since they're always doing tests and trying to improve how twitter works, it was a programming error and that it would be quickly replaced. Then, someone mentioned an issue with spam, and that the link was deliberately removed in response to it.

Technology: Livecasting
My excellent friend ActionGirl hung out with me today. We did a dual-channel livecast using ustream.tv.
Livecasting, if you're not familiar, is one of the newest internet fads, but it's also NOT new. Technology has advanced to the point that the average joe has the ability to broadcast his or her life effortlessly and without cost (except for the obvious costs of computer, webcam, broadband connection, etc).

Technology: Personal Expenses
When I was hanging out with Rox (Darling, from beachwalks.tv and barefeetstudios.com) @ BlogHerBiz '07 back in March, something striking [at least to me] occurred. We did the conference thing and hung out for a few hours, and when she checked her in-box, she had *80* new emails.... EIGHTY!!!
I remember being surprised by two things. The first thing was that she had so many new emails in the span of probably four hours. The second was that..... she wasn't surprised by this at all. She looked at her computer screen like "... here we go again..."... like this was something 'regular'.

Technology: Twitter Has "Ruined" My Life
For those of you that don't know what twitter is... Basically, it's a DIY (do it yourself) chat room. You choose people that you want to "follow", and you can see when they type something to the twitter site. People can choose to follow YOU, and they'll see what you type to twitter. There's no forced mutual following, so sometimes, it's a one-sided deal. You can see what someone's saying, but they can't see what you're saying... which is unfortunate for them when they ask a question that you "tweet" (somehow the verb form of twitter...... meaning each entry should be called a TWIT or the site should be called TWEETER, but anyway...) the answer to and then an hour later, you see them ask again if anyone has a solution for them. :D

Technology: Interview with Eric Rochow of Gardenfork.tv
This week, I had the pleasure of interviewing Eric Rochow, the creator and producer of Gardenfork.tv, his "internet show" or "videoblog".
What is Gardenfork?
Gardenfork is an internet video show - iTunes video podcast about cooking, gardening, and other stuff. Other stuff can include car repair, or how to drop tree with a chainsaw. Its very eclectic; for example I've been doing a series of shows on BBQ, stopping at places whenever I can and interviewing BBQ experts, but then I'm also working on a show about how to repair cracks in your basement walls.
You can watch the show on our website: http://gardenfork.tv or subcribe to it through our page on iTunes.

Download New Joost 0.9.2 Beta
New Joost beta-test version out today. Here's the information and the link:
Apologies to all - but we've got a new Joost version 0.9.2 ready for you - as your old 0.9.1 is no longer working (with a very unfriendly error message as well). You can login and download the new 0.9.2 here:
http://www.joost.com/downloadOur apologies for this - but this is all part of being a beta.
As you may know - we use SSL technology to protect your privacy. Once
every other year or so these certificates need to be renewed. That
moment came, for the first time in our existence, yesterday.
Unfortunately we did not realize that we had a copy hardwired into the
0.9.1 client by accident.Hence this new 0.9.2 build.
We've also taken the opportunity to upgrade all our Long Term Storage
machines; they are more than 4 times as efficient now. So if you have
experienced any stuttering in the past - do try again and tell us if our
fixes have worked.Thanks a lot,

PodCamp NYC Starts Today!
PodCamp NYC starts today, Friday April 6th. There are lots of sessions to attend on Saturday at The New Yorker Hotel (481 8th Avenue at 34th St).
Hi everyone, Eric Skiff here. We’re having a bit of trouble with our email service, and we’re currently not able to send mail to the PodCampNYC list. We’re working hard to get it back online so we can get everyone the pertinent info for Friday and Saturday, but in the meantime I’ll be starting to put some of the info here on the blog. If you use a feed reader, you can subscribe to the rss feed for this blog to get updates as we put them out. We’ll also be putting out late-breaking updates throughout the event on the PodCampNYC twitter account.
Schedule Info
With over 100 talks in 12 different rooms, this event is going to be AMAZING! You can now view the schedules and subscribe to them via Google Calendar or iCal.
Links, and instructions for using the calendars are here:
http://www.podcampnyc.org/wiki/index.php?title=Session_Schedule_Calendar_LinksYou can also download the scheudle as a big, single page PDF.
If you’ve been to another unconference, having the schedule set in advance might seem a little foreign. Often, unconferences are scheduled by filling in a grid on the wall at the event itself. Because of the sheer number of speakers and attendees we felt that in order to create the best experience for everyone we had to focus on making good use of our space and getting sessions arranged in a sensible way.
That said, we do want to encourage ad hoc presentations and last-minute discussions. This is your event, we’re simply doing our best to facilitate. To help foster spontaneous events, Christopher S. Penn will be hosting a “mashboard’ at his sponsor table. Be sure to check out his booth if you’d like to schedule a talk not on the “official” schedule and see what other people are putting up on the board.
Chris has also put together a fantastic “Unofficial Guide to PodCampNYC.” It’s a printable PDF with maps of NYC and the hotel, sessions schedules, local restaurants, and much more. You can download the guide here:
http://www.financialaidpodcast.com/2007/03/31/the-unofficial-guide-to-podcamp-nyc/We’ve only got a few more days between now and PodCampNYC. I’m looking forward to getting to see lots of familiar faces and meet many new friends there!
See you Friday!

The French Constitutional Council has approved a law that criminalizes the filming or broadcasting of acts of violence by people other than professional journalists. The law could lead to the imprisonment of eyewitnesses who film acts of police violence, or operators of Web sites publishing the images, one French civil liberties group warned on Tuesday.

Citizen Journalism
PBS' "Frontline" is doing a series called "News War: What's Happening to the News". Part 3 aired last night @ 9pm, but you can watch it online.
Segment 19 in part 3 is of particular interest to those of us involved in videoblogging, which is, on the simplest level, putting videos on a blog. These videos could be personal. They could be something created or acted out. They could be just about anything.... Except they could also be a documentation of something that happened. For some reason, there's a debate surrounding the importance of this. It seems completely obvious to me that if you document something and post it for people to see..... right now...... ALL around the world........ that makes your work just as valid, if not MORE SO than someone who has a job called "journalist" and took some courses explaining HOW they're supposed to report things and WHAT they're supposed to report. :/
The first part of Segment 19 features an interview with Andrew Baron, creator of Rocketboom, as well as clips featuring Joanne Colan, current Rocketboom anchor and Amanda Congdon, former Rocketboom anchor, subsequently of Amanda Across America, and now ABC News. There's also a clip of Amanda interviewing Josh Wolf, who's currently in jail because of "citizen journalism".

Monetizing Digital Video
A lot of people video blog just because they feel like it. What IS a video blog? or a videoblog or a vlog or.... don't ask! :D There are as many definitions for a video blog as there are _names_ for video blogs. Some people consider any video that's placed on the internet eligible for the title "video blog". Most simply, Steve Garfield would say "A video blog is video on a blog". :D So expand your idea of what a blog is to include a video... ANY video, and there you have it.
Does that make someone that has a blog with videos on it a videoblogger? Again, don't ask! There's the issue of what kind of videos are on the blog. Is it video of kids falling off of skateboards? A cat playing with a ball of string? A scripted, weekly comedy show? Citizen journalism from the streets? Someone sitting alone in their room talking to their iSight as if it were a real person they were having a conversation with? Is it made by individuals? Is it made by companies that were formed and funded with the sole object of delivering video content on the internet? is it made by a television studio as an afterthought or addition to their actual television shows? Do all of those count equally as "video blogs", assuming they meet the base qualification of being "video on a blog"?
What about production values? Does the audio have to be good? Does the video have to be steady? Does the editing (if there is any) have to be decent? Does the video have to show something about you or your environment? Does it have to mean something to anyone? Who's watching it? Friends? Family? People you don't know that live in other cities, states or countries? What's your responsibility to your viewers? Do you make videos with the viewer in mind or only yourself, and if they don't want to watch, they can "change the channel" by clicking on a different link?
See what I mean? :) Don't ask. Let's just assume that there's something called a video blog, and lets assume that it's "video on a blog" like Steve said.
Now, lets assume that someone has this video blog and they want to make some money from it. They have a few options. They could get sponsored by some group, in which case they are paid to put their show on regardless of how many views/hits/clicks/whatever they get. They could sell advertising themselves and include the ad in their actual video. They could have advertising on their web page and not on the video at all. They could place their video on a hosting site that features revenue-sharing.

Turn Up the Heat This Sunday

"Turn Up the Heat: From Miss to Mrs." will be airing this Sunday [Feb 11, 2007] @ 8pm on the TV One broadcast network. Check the TV One channel listings for availability in your area.

Powerhouse Productions' Rochelle Brown and Sonia Armstead produce "Turn Up the Heat", as well as "Living it Up with Patti LaBelle". This year, at the Powerhouse holiday party, they happened to show the "Hinton Battle" episode I edited, and Ms. LaBelle happened to be there, so I filmed it.
