Eco-friendly Skateboards

| posted by Lynne d Johnson

Though far from a teenager, lately I've taken up skateboarding as a personal transportation option for traveling around my 'hood. It's a smart alternative to using my car for short trips to the supermarket or to a nearby restaurant for brunch. No oil waste. No parking hassle. I even prefer it to riding my bike, as I don't have to think about theft control. Besides, I feel like I'm doing my part to preserve the environment.

So of course I was a little excited when I learned about Comet Skateboards, while watching a recent MTV podcast. It turns out that both Current TV and Treehugger have recorded vodcasts with the skateboard maker in the past. Comet uses the most ecologically sustainable materials -- such as carbon fiber and harvested bamboo -- when manufacturing its products. The company is also in the process of building a sustainable skateboard park in Oakland.

I wish there were more companies out there like this.

At the age of 33, and feeling a little old to be doing so, I also recently purchased a skateboard as an alternative mode of transportation. Further to doing my part, I recently found an interesting article on www.treehugger.com about an entrepreneur in New York that manufactures bags out of recycled skateboard decks. Her website was www.beckycity.com It's really neat to see everyone doing their part to preserve the enviroment.

Cool idea! www.boardpusher.com is a website where you can design and purchase your own skateboard. For the same price as buying a "pro" deck, my kids are having more fun in creating and skating their own!

I am working on a collaborative project of the development of an eco skateboard which can been seen at Lets Evo Eco Skateboard Project. The project was started in Brazil but seeks to involve people from different parts of the world to participate and collaborate. Lynne, but thinking through what you wrote about the materials used by Comet Skateboards: Carbon Fiber is not really ecological...especially if Developing on what R. Bryan sad...I think sites like Treehugger.com, Inhabitat.com and worldchanging.com are helping to spread the word around this theme. It's nice to know that Fastcompany also brings such things to discussion. Congratulations!
