Reputation Management - When Good Names go Bad

| posted by Jason Bland

Everyone makes mistakes but with the eye of the Google always watching, those mistakes often become public. Here is a short list of things to do if your personal or business reputation is in jeopardy.

Do Not Reply

Replying to a negative blog post or bad review will simply give credibility to the bad press. You should never address the issue publicly or openly deny anything. Your online reputation management campaign should proceed without mentioning the bad press.

Setting Up Sideways Relevant Blogs

In extreme cases, your reputation management company may have to setup a blog. However, the blog will be relevant to the business, not for the business. For example, if a car detailer is falsely accused of stealing personal belongings from their clients cars, their reputation management company may setup a blog on cars, syndicate third party articles, then position their reputation building articles within those blogs as another outlet for “good news”.

Learn from Your Mistakes

If the negative press is truly due to your own negligence, take the name cleansing as a opportunity to change your policies. Reputation management is affordable but if you are causing the bad press, that is an expense you would probably rather do without. So take a reputation “get out of jail free card” and become a more customer oriented business.
