April Fool's Play
| posted by Heath RowYou might have missed it because Google introduced it over the weekend (I know I just got the 411 today), but the April Fool's Day announcement of its new service, Google Romance, was just that -- an April Fool's joke.
Google wasn't the only organization to hold up some holiday humor. Per the Washington Post's Rob Pegoraro, Slashdot, OpenOffice, and the Mac newsletter TidBits also joined in on the josh.
What do you think of such humorous announcements and Web pranks? Is it appropriate for esteemed enterprises -- perhaps even your own -- to try to pull one over your customers' and clients' eyes? How fast and loose do you play with the respect your partners have for you and your work?

JonathanYou are right, i think there is a line to be drawn when it comes to online pranks being played by respectable businesses. However, when you're google, i think you can do pretty much anything of that nature. Also, over the years google has consistently kept a light-hearted attitude about almost everything. I don't feel any less respect for google today than i did before i heard this news.

Chris HouchensBy far, the best corporate April Fools device this year were fake "the more you know" PSAs on NBC done by the cast of The Office.
You can see them all here...

The best ones are Pam's "smell" and Jim's "jellybeans"...and each and every one of Dwight's.

CassidyApril fools day is what it is. Everyone should be aware that any announcements, news stories etc may not be what they say they are.
My all-time favourite was done by the BBC, when they aired a ducumentary in Spaghetti Farming.
They had liitle old Italian women picking raw spaghetti of of vineyards.

PaavaniIts plain stupidity when such esteemed names do the same. Like, what if you come to know about after few days. You might believe it. and even start talking to your friends. And when they say such kinda product would not work. Its actually harms the company image.

Martha RunnetteI think corporate April Fools' jokes are completely appropriate and hilarious. I'm glad there's at least one day a year for all of us to be reminded not to take life so seriously. :)

Jackie PetersI think more corporations should let loose a bit like Google has. An enterprise, after all, is only the sum of it's parts - people. We are all human and I think that too often large enterprises loose their humanity among the corporate culture, policies, procedures and red tape. More companies should follow Google's example. Their ability to innovate as an organization stems from the human-factor that they incorporate into their business model. This is just a public extension of that "corporate humanity." Kudos to Google.

SparkinaApril Fool's Day pranks in general -- yes. The dating feature being just a prank -- no.
The Google Gulp thing and the moon-employment thing, that I can see, but not this. This was cruel and in poor taste, because it involved people who were in a circumstance in which they did not wish to be.
Some unpartnered soul reads about this new Google feature and logs in hoping to find their heart's true hero (or SHE-ro) -- and gets the message that it's a prank. Sorry. Funny like a plane crash

VickiHeath may not have heard about Google Romance until two days later... I cruised over to google.com on Sunday looking for this year's April Fool.
I'm also a big fan off the special April Fool "products" at thinkgeek.com. Last year my favorite was the USB fondue set.
I don't mind this sort of joke when it's so obvious (and, with apologies to Sparkina, there were plenty of hints and clues on every page that Google Romance was definitely NOT real.)
