Non-Standard Success Stats

| posted by Heath Row

And in today's Journal, an article about Jim Collins's current activities (subscription required) reminds me of James Hong's most recent venture -- and highlights the importance of different ways of measuring success.

In a new monograph available from online retailers, Collina turns his attention to organizations such as orchestras and hospitals.

A breakthrough came when he spoke to leaders of the Cleveland Orchestra, They weren't trying to increase earnings per share or return on equity; instead, they tracked standing ovations, invitations to perform in Europe, and the number of orchestras copying the Cleveland style.

What non-traditional metrics might you apply to your work?

It's great that leaders have a non-traditional look at metrics, but here's a non-tradional look at leadership itself: 'why your boss is programmed to be a dictator' over at changethis.com

Unusual and effective performance metric:

"Nights per week that the general manager is able to leave the studio before 7:00 PM."

My experience has been that business owners will greatly benefit by prioritizing and measuring the life / work balance. My clients that adopt such a metric are usually suprised by the results, and encouraged to take better care of themselves and their families.

Metrics depend upon definitions of success of course. If you use non-traditional definitions of success, the metrics change accordingly.

Non traditional methods now a days bring success as people are so used to the tradtional method that it seldom appeals them.Offbeat and non traditional, but something innovative and appealing approach is needed in work environment. It will encourage creativity and the product will get mass appeal thereby increasing the profit base and user's base too.

I should rather try with innovative and thoughtful approach to the work.Traditional metrics may not always be correct though generally it may be.I must be ready for the exceptions and I believe I have nothing to look back.
