iPod Crime Wave
| posted by David LidskyI missed this a couple of days ago (probably because I was too busy being hated around the world for my views on The Office), but subway robberies in New York are up and they're being blamed on the iPod.
Who would have thought that ostentatiously showing off how hopelessly trendy you are with a $500 item would have such consequences? So now people wearing those ridiculous white headphones don't just look hopelessly sheep-like, but they're a target too! Ha! If you're going to continue in your mistaken, brainwashed belief that the iPod is the best MP3 player out there (Sony and even Creative have more intuitive interfaces and better features), at least do yourself a favor and stop looking like a yutz with those "please rob me" white headphones.

timThis is reminiscent of the "Somebody stole my Jordan's" crime spree. Michael Jordan Nike basketball shoes where THE shoes to own. Thieves would knock their victims senseless and steal the shoes. Here's an interesting commentary.
I guess that's the downside to owning the coolest thing on the block and displaying it as you walk down the street (be it shoes or headphones). You become a target for five finger discount wanna-be's.

jameskitty1. one robbery per day does not a crimewave make. this 'ipod headphones make you a target' urban legend is bullshit. if there is some sort of actual trend, its only being created by yellow journalists looking for it and over reporting.
2. sony & creative may have decent offerrings, but sooner or later you have to connect the device to a computer to load it. only apple does that effectively.
tv shows and fake crimewaves? don't you have anything real to report on?

Debra OwenThis sort of reminds me of the 'shark scare' in summer 2001. Remember? It was a slow news summer, and suddenly 'shark bites' were big news. In fact, there were all sorts of reports about a small town close to where I was living at the time that had a surf competition every year. Suddenly it was "someone got attacked by a shark!" When the truth was, there were fewer shark attacks that year than normal (for the competition).
There were reports in London about subway robberies of iPods a few months ago. Apparently, it was a slow news cycle there. So we go from taking 'the Office' and making it a pale version of the original to getting our slow news cycles there too?
(Believe me, my tongue is firmly implanted in my cheek.)
