* Sins of Commission

In Monster's blog today, Thad shares what he considers the seven deadly sins at work. His include:

  • Grandstanding
  • Throwing thy coworker under the bus
  • Unresponsiveness
  • Taking credit for thy coworker's efforts
  • Laziness
  • Resisting change
  • Overtly obsequious behavior

And here are mine:

  • Not saying "No," when you really, truly need to
  • Its corollary: Consciously overpromising -- and underdelivering
  • Criticizing colleagues rather than learning how to work with them better
  • Unresponsiveness -- right on, Thad!
  • Not holding onto the information you need, or know you will need
  • Its corollary: Requesting that others repeat work that's already been done because you didn't hold onto the information you need (i.e., not taking responsibility for your own negligence)
  • Being late: For work, for meetings, for appointments, with deadlines -- respect your coworkers time

What are yours?

Geez, are there seven more left? I guess I'd add:

* Lying or pretending not to know/remember
* Resistance by asking for more detail
* Resistance to personal growth
* "Not in my job description"
* Unresponsiveness again...that gets my goat!
* Calling a meeting without an agenda...gah!
* Succumbing to analysis paralysis

-Resisting change:"because that's how we've always done it!"
-Not sharing useful tools with the team.
-Working hard...not to get fired!/Lacking passion.
-Mastering the art of appearing to be busy./Being a parasite of team members' efforts.
-Assuming mistakes done by co-workers are to be treated differently than mistakes done by oneself. [cf:Fundamental attribution error]
-Worrying too much about syntax and ignoring semantics.
...
-Whining about co-workers' behavior on a blog! ;)

1. Believing you cannot be replaced;
2. Acting as though you're more important than "the team";
3. Failing to proofread your copy before it gets circulated:
4. Failing to have others proofread your copy before it goes final;
5. Not using spellcheck or other syntax helpers;
6. Not being civil with coworkers and clients;
7. Believing you're overworked and underpaid.

And some more....
1. Taking yourself more seriously than your work.
2. Screwing up!
3. Passing up the opportunity to have others give input into your work: Group think works!
4. Believing it's your job to make other people like who you are.
5. Underestimating your own ability
6. Placing opinion over what the data says
7. Failing to have a backup plan
