Yes. The Institute for OneWorld Health in San Francisco claims to the the first one in the U.S. Just today it received a $42.6 million five-year grant from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to try to cure malaria.

Cool. The Gates are to be commended for their incredibly generous philanthropy; there are not enough people in the upper percentiles who make the effort to help those in the lowest percentiles in this manner.

I do wonder, though, whether OneWorld will be able to use open-source development as freely from this point forward in achieving their goals? I certainly hope so.
