Congratulations to the recent winners of the Baldrige National Quality Award, announced yesterday. Applicants are judged on leadership, strategic planning, customer and market focus, information and analysis, human resources, process management, and results.

It's remarkable how little attention is now paid to the Baldrige Award. We all know that quality is still rare and elusive. We all know that U.S. manufacturing, in particular, is in a weaker state than it was when the Baldrige was launched. So why don't we give more attention and hoopla to this event?
